ELECTION OF 1796
This was Thomas Jefferson's first election. This was also Jefferson's first and only loss. At this time, Jefferson, not being President, had not yet established the Twelfth Amendment. This Amendment stated that the candidates run with a Vice President candidate instead of the top two Presidential candidates getting the positions. This means that since Jefferson lost, he became Vice President.
Secretary of State
Before he was Vice President, Jefferson was Secretary of State. George Washington instantly requested that Jefferson become a cabinet member. Jefferson was Secretary of State from 1790 to 1793. After 1793, he retired from his position as Secretary of State.
